Mets could cause an upset in the Big Apple
The New York Mets make the short trip across the city to face the New York Yankees in the Subway Series off the back of a 6-1 win over the Colorado Rockies last night. Starting pitcher Jason Vargas will be hoping to spark a winning streak as he continues to improve after a disappointing start to the season. Earlier in the year the Mets management were forced to publicly back their man as his ERA ballooned to 14.21.
Since then, Vargas has repaid the confidence shown in him, shutting out the San Francisco Giants last time out and dropping his ERA to 3.57, a figure only bettered by Jacob DeGrom amongst starters. With Vargas in good form and the Mets on a high, they look good value for the win at 8/5.
Sale finally turning a corner
Boston Red Sox ace, Chris Sale has been unlucky this season, he has a respectable ERA but sits with a 2-7 record. Fortunately for the 30-year-old tonight’s opponent, the Texas Rangers, are one of his favourite teams to pitch against. Sale boats a 7-2 career record against the Rangers and will be expecting to earn his third win of the season tonight, particularly after pitching a complete game shutout in his last appearance.
Sale’s opposite number, Mike Minor, is also in good form and has been close to unhittable with runners in scoring position this term, so the game could be a close, low scoring affair. I expect Sale’s class to shine through for the Red Sox.
Dodgers heavy favourites in Hollywood battle
Another crosstown rivalry plays out in LA tonight with All-Star candidate Hyun-Jin Ryu leading the Dodgers in to Anaheim to face the Angels. Ryu (9-1) is tied for the best record in the MLB and is looking to reach 10 wins for the first time since 2014, he faces rookie pitcher Griffin Canning who has impressed in recent outings, but often seems to struggle in pressure situations, the Dodgers are fresh off back-to-back wins over the San Francisco Giants and will expect their stable of big hitters to cause the Angels problems throughout tonight’s game. Look for Ryu and the Dodgers to earn the win in a high scoring, comfortable win.
