Paul Scholes believes Manchester United need to focus their efforts on keeping Paul Pogba at Old Trafford beyond the summer.

The France international’s future has been a source of relentless debate in recent months following Zinedine Zidane’s return to Real Madrid as their new manager.

Zidane is thought to be an admirer of the Manchester United record signing and Pogba is rumoured to be keen to work under the French legend at The Bernabeu.

Pogba’s stock has risen at Old Trafford since the appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Manchester United’s caretaker manager back in December.

The club-record signing found himself out of favour under Solskjaer’s predecessor Jose Mourinho, fuelling speculation about a move this summer.

Although the current Manchester United manager was able to get the best out of Pogba for a couple of months, reports in the media this week suggested their pair’s relationship has soured.

Pogba scored twice from the penalty spot in Manchester United’s 2-1 victory over West Ham United at Old Trafford on Saturday evening.

When asked if Manchester United should keep Juan Mata, Ander Herrera, Antonio Valencia or Matteo Darmian this summer, Scholes named the one player he thinks that Solskjaer needs to ensure stays at the club.

“I think there was a time going back a few years, if United lost a player, no matter how big a player it was, [it didn’t matter],” Scholes told BT Sport.

“Whether it was David Beckham, Roy Keane, Cristiano [Ronaldo] at times. It didn’t matter, it really didn’t matter.

“But at this point now, if you’re losing Paul Pogba… He gets some stick for his inconsistency, we know that, but he’s still scored 15 goals this season.

“If you sell Pogba now, you’re selling your best player.”

Pogba has scored 12 goals from the penalty spot this term.
